I realize that I don’t wear bindis anymore but here’s a super old throwback from when I was 14(?)
And my odissi group (who are my babies and bffs)
I was blessed to grow up in a relatively diverse area as a child, but moving right before middle school to a completely different setting changed my life. The people who teased me in middle school for having oily hair, for having smelling clothes, for making a face when they see me outside of school in Indian clothes now ask how to get their hair as thick as mine, for the best Indian restaurants recommendations, and if I could do their mehndi for them.
It took a long time to build up my pride and confidence for my culture again, and I will not let a bunch of bland white people make me lose it ever again 🇮🇳
